The Howling: Wolfpack Weekly Update -- October 19, 2026
The Howling (Oct 19)
Howl out to Kabir "Kaboom" Ghale for his Personal Best he set at IronMan California!!! Even with the River swim which looked like a water park thrill ride, he still beat his former PR by a little over an hour. So much more headroom for him to keep getting faster, but great to see his year over year improvements.
And, also at IronMan California, Yelp out to Jon Curran who's an RMTCer that I cross paths with a lot! Nice Personal Record you set Jon! :)
Howl out to Andy "The Hammer" Solomon -- he did his second triathlon as a Florida resident at the AdventHealth Triple Sprint in Clermont, Florida. In this race, he did three back-to-back Sprints. The course is, in effect, an Olympic Tri distance but you do the course three times to get there; so, it is like those multibricks we all do -- 3 x (.25 Swim, 8.2 mile Bike, and 2 mile Run). I knew he'd do well at this as he's done those SOS races; but, I was really impressed with how he put the whole thing together -- in the end, 4th OVERALL and 1st Master's Men (over 40)! What stuck with me was a comment he made afterwards, and this goes right to the philosophy behind the workouts we do. He really ran well at the race, and, notably, the final 2 mile run where he had a handful of guys right on his heels and he was suffering, he focused on leg turnover (i.e., cadence) as that is the goal of all those silly transition runs I have you all do. The objective is simply, after any workout, to do a mile where you focus on just turning the legs over as quick as you can. Well, that's what he did and had a great performance!
The "Howl to the Moon" goes to Matt "Jiffy" Lubiak! I don't often cite non-Tri's for Moon Howls, but this particular open running race was one for the ages. Matt, at 55, isn't getting older, he's getting faster. When we started working together, neither of us thought that he'd become a faster runner, as he already had unbelievable run race results. The goal was more so to, with each year, maintain the same speed which is enough to dominate his age group given how fast he is. At Atlantic City, he raced his 15th Marathon (3rd at AC with his previous best at AC being a 3:17) and brought home a 3:06:21 to place 3rd M50-59 (1st M55-59)! Of course, I have to add that "you couldn't find 30 seconds over the 26 miles to get to 2nd"... :) We actually talked a bit about "the how" he gets faster given that he already is an accomplished runner. Well, as I see it, he does the workouts and follows the spirit of them. I am a big believer in focused pace variations in running and I think he is an example of how the workouts can translate to race day... :) FANTASTIC race!
Yelp out to Matt "The Mountain" Rogotzke who was a Wolfpack Member last year. Matt PR'd with a 5:08:42 at IronMan 70.3 North Carolina in some tough weather conditions! So close to limboing under 5 Matt! :)
GET READY TO HOWL AS THIS IS A BIG WEEKEND!
Tara "Yes I Can" Corduan is off to California to race at the Alpha Wins Napa Valley Half-Ironman!!!
Thomas "The Swede" Andreasson will be racing in Washington, Missouri at the Corn Cob 10K -- Note: Washington is known as the Corn Cob Pipe Capital of the World (Little trivia for you... :) )
