Andy "The Hammer" Solomon — "Just Turn the Legs Over"
Andy Solomon did his second triathlon as a Florida resident at the AdventHealth Great Floridian Triple Challenge in Clermont, Florida. In this race, he did three back-to-back Sprints. The course is, in effect, an Olympic Tri distance but you do the course three times to get there; so, it is like those multibricks we all do — 3 x (.25 Swim, 8.2 mile Bike, and 2 mile Run). I knew he'd do well at this as he's done those SOS races; but, I was really impressed with how he put the whole thing together — in the end, 4th OVERALL out of 96 finishers and 1st Master's Men (over 40)!
What stuck with me was a comment he made afterwards, and this goes right to the philosophy behind the workouts we do. He really ran well at the race, and, notably, the final 2 mile run where he had a handful of guys right on his heels and he was suffering, he focused on leg turnover (i.e., cadence) as that is the goal of all those silly transition runs I have you all do. The objective is simply, after any workout, to do a mile where you focus on just turning the legs over as quick as you can. Well, that's what he did and had a great performance!
Relentless Forward Motion!! :)
